Rick,

This might not help but we should all be aware of it...

There are over 70,000,000 listings of residential listings and phone numbers available on infoseek at "www.infoseek.com". Just click on "find people" and type in the name Marlin Gibson". There are several Marlin Gibsons listed, and it would be our luck, that none of them are the one you're looking for. This may be of common knowledge to most, but thought it might be a good opportunity for the rest of the lions to come aboard on "people search". Anyway, it's always an excellent tool for finding out where I live. :-)

change of subject. TR6. I, too had a TR6, 1974, chocolate brown, red striped tires, air. On June 13, 1977, Jim Gaylor (class of 69) and I were heading to Auburn, Alabama and had a head on collision with a white Ford Van... the van won. Left me in hospital for 10 days, broken arm, concussion, compression fracture of 5th lumbar. Totaled the car....sure do miss it.

Subject: Weird Crime!

Just got this email from my brother. Sounds to crazy to believe! Let me know if anyone else has heard this one.

Message thread follows:
- ------------------------

Dear Friends,

I wish to warn you about a new crime ring that is targeting business travelers. This ring is well organized, well funded, has very skilled personnel, and is currently in most major cities and recently very active in New Orleans.

The crime begins when a business traveler goes to a lounge for a drink at the end of the work day. A person in the bar walks up as they sit alone and offers to buy them a drink. The last thing the traveler remembers until they wake up in a hotel room bath tub, their body submerged to their neck in ice, is sipping that drink. There is a note taped to the wall instructing them not to move and to call 911. A phone is on a small table next to the bathtub for them to call. The business traveler calls 911 who have become quite familiar with this crime. The business traveler is instructed by the 911 operator to very slowly and carefully reach behind them and feel if there is a tube protruding from their lower back. The business traveler finds the tube and answers, "Yes." The 911 operator tells them to remain still, having already sent paramedics to help. The operator knows that both of the business traveler's kidneys have been harvested. This is not a scam or out of a science fiction novel, it is real. It is documented and confirmable. If you travel or someone close to you travels, please be careful.

Regards,

Just when you thought it was safe in the airports.....Hard to believe, but I got this from a reliable source at Corporate.

For any of you doing any traveling, beware. From: Patty Hou, on 12/16/96 10:33 AM:

Yes, this does happen. My sister-in-law works with a lady that this happened to her son's neighbor who lives in Houston. The only "good" thing to this whole story is the fact that the people doing this horrible crime are very in tune to what complications can happen afterwards because of the details precautions they take the time to set up before leaving the room.

The word from my sister-in-law is that the hospital in Las Vegas (yes, Vegas) prior to transferring him back to Houston stated that these people know exactly what they are doing. The incision, etc. was exact and clean. They use sterile equipment etc. and the hospital stated that other than the fact that the victim loses a kidney there has not been any reports of other complications due to non-sterile, etc. tactics that were used.

From: Kathy Dev, on 12/13/96 3:25 PM:

Sadly, this is very true. My husband is a Houston Firefighter/EMT and they have received alerts regarding this crime ring. It is to be taken very seriously. The daughter of a friend of a fellow firefighter had this happen to her. Skilled doctor's are performing these crimes! (which, btw, have been highly noted in the Las Vegas area)

Additionally, the military has received alerts regarding this.

You're right, it does sound too crazy to believe. I just don't know if this is crazy or not. If this is legit, someone out there please post the name and date of a newspaper or magazine that has an article on this, just a reference to any news article in print that can be checked in a library.

Either that or someone out there may just be getting a laugh over seeing how far a sick rumor will go. (I realize that Tom's brother doesn't comment on its accuracy, he is just passing it on)

They are still cleaning up after Hurricane Fran. Many places that are usually open in the off season were closed. The Ferry was not running. Still, it was a great day away from work.

I need all the friends I can get since I'm stuck in this god-forsaken ice hole called Minnesota (apologies to MN natives). Especially enjoy a sarcastic sense of humor (as long as it's playful) and it's hard to find people that really understand. Also, it's extremely hard to relay sarcastic humor with the written word if you don't know the person (I think we all know and appreciate that!) P.S. I do enjoy reading the notes back & forth, but sometimes they have little or no relevance to the "entire" Baker HS mailing list. One-to-one conversations like that might better be taken off-line. At times, I recognize names of the older brothers/sisters of my playmates from elementary years and I especially enjoyed the Fletcher Ave. thread last fall. I feel as if I'm sitting in the BHS cafeteria and listening to the upperclass-"men" rant, rave, and have fun during lunch. It's a wonderful feeling.

BTW, I see by my Columbus city map (finally) that the Benning Park streets are un-named and that the Benning Park symbol has the area moved over to where the community park used to be -- across the street from the Piggly Wiggly market. Is this correct or is the map skewed a bit?

I have to agree with Joy White. Some of the e-mail is irrelevant to me, but I keep hoping I see something about Roger Cadenhead or Marcy (Tjossem) Wilkinson - and whatever happened to Kathy Miller in Latin class? Remember that old bat Miss Inez Newman? Was she weird or what?

Someone even inquired lately about Mr. Hardy - he's on this list, I think!

Anyway, if anyone knows the whereabouts of Betsy Shevlin ('63?) (or any of the other Shevlin kids: John, Margaret, Barbara - ?) or Randy Scott or Eddie Harris or Charles Christopher Robinson or Steve Simmons - this could go on forever - please put them in touch with me. Thanks.

Bob Brown: Did you ever find Marcy's address on your mailing list?

Lynn,

You asked about many of the people that I would like to know more about, as well. The last we heard, Roger Cadenhead was a minister in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Some of my class members have talked with him on the phone.

The last I heard, Kathy Miller was living in the Jacksonville, Florida area with an unlisted telephone number. Has anyone heard from her or knows more?

I saw Steve Simmons within the last couple of years. He missed our last high school reunion because his house had burned after being hit by lightening. He is married and a stockbroker. He had a daughter who was a freshman at UGA. Still blonde hair with that quick smile -- just a bit more stock broker type intenseness :) (I think that he would agree and remember this is a compare/contrast to the way he was in Mrs. Newnan's Latin class in high school).

I think there are some relatives of Eddie Harris on this list.... Did I hear that he was living and working in Austin, Texas?

Anybody remember the Pinky Dinky ice cream trucks that always came in the summer time?

How about the old man that used to drive a pick-up truck with a grocery stand on the back. He would always throw down an empty Coca-cola 6 pack carton (remember those things?) for you to stand on the hot asphalt with your bare feet while you looked over the candy.

Remember how tough the bottoms of your feet used to be? Seems like we had no trouble walking on gravel roads-can't do that now.

How about playing baseball until dark on the streets (in the days before street lights). Inevitably some one would fall down and loose the top layer of skin on their knees or elbows.

How about all the trips to the drive in theater - what was the name? Used to be on Victory Drive about where North Lumpkin road splits off.

Great memories, Rick! Our group used to roam all over the place after parties or on Halloween. Can't remember all the names, but the group my mom called "The Rice Street Gang" (off Victory Drive) included Walter Cook, Linda Cox, Joyce Harper, Milton Caffey, Glenn and Linda Seawell, Linda Schaffer (sp.?), and Georgia Edmonds.

Don Fryburger was the first one in our class to wear plaid pants to school. Seems like Mr. Boyles sent him home to change! I don't think girls could wear pants, either. Amazing how dress and hair codes have changed over the years.

The horrible inflation of the 70's sure changed the price of a hamburger! My kids don't believe me when I tell them about the 10 cent Krystal burgers or the 19 cent McDonalds hamburger.

Thanks everyone, for sharing.

You're absolutely right, Keith, some of us were very fortunate even though our parents were working-class people.

Sometimes I think having "too much" is what's wrong with our kids. We have given them so much, they haven't had to work hard to overcome difficulties and have never developed the kind of work ethic that made people like you so successful. I see it in my own kids and in the ones I teach as well.

Debbie, Yes, I completely agree with you. I teach undergraduate classes now and its extremely difficult to even get the students to listen in class. Values are totally different, if only they could age first and then return after they have glimsed their future. When I travel overseas to teach the culture is entirely different, my students in HK, Singaore and Malaysia are more motivated, sincere and most of all have an intense desire to learn. Sure is a great experience and I'm attempting to transfer some of that into my classrooms here.

Anyway, on my braver days I would step in, never venturing near the dark, smokey rear of the building where the hustlers did their thing, and I'd order a cheeseburger (for 50 cents, if you can believe it) from the bartender. On my more prosperous days, I would throw in a bag of Fritos - for an extra five cents!!

Keith, The Goo Goo was THE place to meet and greet the opposite, acording to my older sister. It was the hangout for the Jordan and Columbus crowd..

Speaking of hangouts, Firm Roberts Cafe on Cusseta Rd was the place of the original SCRAMBED DOG. Alot of folks think that Dinglewood Pharmacy was the originator of the Scrambled Dog, but they do not know their history. Mr Smith who ran Firm Roberts orginated it.

Memories Continued:

Does anyone remember the great Basketball game against Jordan, in their gym, 28 games without a loss, 5, 4, 3, 2 seconds the shot by Mike Stokes form 3/4 court, stripped the net and Baker ends up 30-0.? Went to the state playoffs and lost a 1 point game against Beach of Savannah. They had a guy named Barry Timmerman scored 43 points...I''ll never forget that name.

Our starting five was Milton Caffey, Tommy Bryant, Mike Stokes, Ricky Howard and Eddie Miller, if my memory serves me right. That was the greatest team!!!!

Yes Dinglewood had a good scrambled dog, but the Rolls-Royce was the Crystal Pool Hall across the street from the downtown Kirven's. Their scrambled dog included cole slaw and was so much better than the chili dog with oyster crackers. Plus with the cole slaw I'm sure it was a whole lot healthier than the other.

Deborah and Keith,

Gee, I felt like I was listening to my Dad talk about walking to school in a foot of snow, in the mountains of Virginia, North of Charlottesville, Va. I certainly did my share of part time jobs to pay for my school up in Dahlonega, Ga. I sold bibles door to door in Valdese, NC. for six weeks in the summer of '69, lost about 10 lbs off of a 160 lb. frame! Came home to Columbus to work at Sears Auto Center until school started again!

Kinnett's Dairy, Civil Service clerk typist, YAC Pool Lifeguard and pool manager, reroofed airplane hangers at Lawson Army Airfield, served food in college, construction at Atlanta Airport, ROTC Summer Camp, Ft. Bragg, NC, painted houses, worked in metal fabrication plant, etc..ad nauseum. We did what we had to do to finish school and get started with our lives. I think a trap many of us parents fall into is providing what "everyone else" is giving to their children.

Hey, I have four children, the oldest is a junior at Ga. Southern. and they know college is a joint venture, and my portion of the Collier scholarship (my financial assistance)goes away if a certain GPA is not maintained. I paid for over 50% of my college myself, and its a good feeling to know that I was able to help out my parents in that small way. The best example we can give our families (children) as they grow up, is a loving and respectful relationship between the parents, which flows over to the children. They need to see that hard work on the job promotes success, and that the family will be there for support whenever it is needed.

Keith, you've done well, as has Deborah...your parents must bust their buttons with pride over your accomplishments! Keep up the good work!

I share your memories of that B-Ball team (`65-66 season) ... Stokes' shot, the big banner headline in the school paper "28-0, State to Go", etc ... I remember the infamous Barry Timmerman (later played at Tennessee) and always wondered why Coach Ball didn't just send Ken Emerson and/or Ken James after the guy, thereby reducing him to a greasy spot on the court ... Wasn't there a Ricki Richardson at point guard? Or was he a couple of years later with Ed Ochs et all?

On a more somber note, Ed Ochs came back from Viet Nam with multiple vision (saw eight of everything) ... he went to a variety of eye specialists but to no avail ...last I heard he was living in Houston but very reclusive (would only speak to his brother, Rich) ... if anyone has any update to Ed's condition please let me know ... he was one of my best friends and an idol to me ... I still have the golf clubs he gave me when he joined the Army ...

Absolutely!! I enjoy this so much! Yes, even though we are from different eras, we seem to have so many of the same good memories. Times are so different now and I wish the kids nowadays could have had it as easy as we did. By easy, I mean not so much peer pressure and pressure from society, the abundance of drugs, etc., and a simpler life. Cols. was just one of those places that sort of stuck with you when you left (a place where times were easier and hard also). for some reason, Cols. seemed to have a special kind of culture that people attach a different kind of a "fondness"to.

The Checkmate Club?... hell yes I (and several more of us) remember it. it ranked right up there with... "The Toad Stool" in its infamy. I believe Glen(?) Spurlock lost his job at Baker for going there during his off time (oh those wicked drug days). Sunshine should remember him and the incident. And then.. there was the "old" Aztec Lounge. The volume on our list has ramped up a bit <grin> and it for some people it's a bit much.

We hate to lose anyone, but if electronic discussion lists aren't your cup of tea, it's really easy to get off the mailing list. The fastest, most certain way is to send the command to unsubscribe to the list server computer yourself.

Here's what you do: Send a message to Lions-L-Request@Baker.HS.org ^^^^^^^^ Notice the "-Request" part of the address... that's what sends the message to the list server instead of to all of us, and it's a part of the magic formula which makes this work.

Put anything you want in the subject of the message, but in the _body_ of the message, put the single word "unsubscribe" (without the quotes). Nothing else... just "unsubscribe." You're talking to a robot, not a person, and if you're polite or chatty you'll confuse the poor thing!

Should you change your mind in the future and want to rejoin us, send a "subscribe" message to the same address.

Subject: Mailing List Netiquette

I came across the following material published by the University of Chicago, and I've adapted it a bit for Lions-L. I'm going to try to send it to the list about once a month. You can safely ignore it by looking for messages from me with the subject "Mailing List Netiquette."

Electronic communication, with all of its advantages, has a small number of drawbacks. Essentially, it provides the immediacy of casual conversation, but without the important social context on which casual conversation relies for much of its meaning. Tone, attitude, and emotional state can easily be misinterpreted due to the lack of intonation, gesture, and facial expression.

We thought we would offer some guidelines to keep in mind while composing and reading your electronic mail.

Use descriptive "Subject:" lines. If you change subjects in a reply, please edit the subject line appropriately.

Write as you would a letter: use upper- and lowercase characters and complete sentences. USING ALL CAPITALS MAKES IT LOOK LIKE YOU ARE SHOUTING!

Leave white space between paragraphs.

If you are replying to someone else's message, summarize your understanding of the previous letter, or quote enough of the original to be understandable; many people receive hundreds of messages a day, which makes it very easy to lose track of a conversation.

Do not quote the entire message though - use an editor to remove all but the relevant portion. Quoting the whole message is worse than not quoting at all.

Keep your signature short.

Think before you write. Many e-mail lists have well-defined subject matter, and straying off-subject is considered rude. The Lions-L list is more general, but even here, not all messages are appropriate. Think about whether you'd say something at a party with many people you don't know very well. If you wouldn't, it's probably not appropriate for the Lions-L list, either.

Be aware of irony, humor and satire. Don't jump to conclusions about others', but try to mark yours appropriately - the use of emoticons is one way to accomplish this. :-)

Remember that subtlety is difficult to communicate, and you may be misinterpreted.

Double-check the headers on each message you send - make sure it is going to the people you want it to reach.

Mail only messages you would be willing to claim years from now.

If your mailer automatically appends binary attachments or an HTML version of your message, turn this feature off before sending to a mailing list.

George '72,

I do remeber the incident, and I believe his name was Glen Spurlock (sp).

Also remember the Trampoline Center next to Shamrock Cafe. Jerry Entrekin used to work there and was great on the trampolines. They were ground level and built over a whole in the ground. There was also a miniature golf next door. For those who need a street to remember, it was on Fort Benning Rd, near Muscogee Elementary School.

One of my fondest (and yet saddest memories) of the time involved a trip to Well's Daries for ice cream.

My sister Kathy and I lived out on Custer Terrace near some other folks who some of you may recall - Connie (Charlie) Morgan, Jim Bing and Bill Medieros and a host of others. One friend was a black gal, Fran (last name escapes me right now) who rode the bus with us, but then had to continue on to one of the segregated black schools.

One summer evening, the craving for dutch chocolate almond ice cream struck! Off we went, Kathy, Fran, me, and my then 3rd grade sister, Joy. On the way, we got to cutting up, and the result was Fran and I walking into the dairy bar hand-in-hand with blonde Joy riding on my shoulders, and Kathy pretending not to know us but in hysterics laughing.

I'm surprised there weren't heart attacks.

Anyway, we bought our ice cream and left with no incident.

A sad commentary on some of our history, but a point of pride on the balance I got growing up a "brat".

Bums,

I'm sure this has crossed more minds than just my own. But wouldn't it be great if we could all get together for an evening of.... of..... well, whatever. See old faces, exchange war stories, renew acquaintances, etc.

It would have to be a weekend, probably a Saturday night, to allow out-of-towners to make the trip. It would have to be far enough in the future to allow everyone to plan for it. It would have to be a non-family holiday weekend, so as to not interfere with peoples' plans to visit family; (like not Easter, not 4th of July, not Memorial Day).

If there is enough interest...... Let's hear from you.

Frank and Bob,

I really hope that we can have something special in 2000, but something this year would be really great too.

Maybe if we meet this year, we could start laying the ground work for 2000. It will take a lot more than one person can do, and meeting now could give us the chance to form a ' 2000 Committee ', etc.

Not living in Columbus, I am limited in what I can do, but I certainly am willing to do everything I can. If the response is good enough, and a date set, I will schedule a week of vacation to help, if needed. I'd like to spend a week or so in Columbus anyway ( Lots of people and old neighborhoods to visit ).

He might want to kill me for this, but I also think that Sunshine could play a key role in having something. I think he knows everybody, and everybody seems to love him as much as I have since we were little kids on Fletcher Ave.

Fellow Bums and Site Surfers, A reunion is a great idea. I'd love to see some of the faces that go with the writings we've enjoyed; as well as seeing people I remember.

This year, is supposed to be the 25 yr. reunion for my class (if one is in fact going to happen). Would anyone be up for the idea of combining the class of '72, 25 yr. reunion with an initial reunion of everyone who's on here? It would be a point to start with for the 2000 or 2001 reunion you're all talking about. Just a thought.

And yeah.... asking Sunshine to orchestrate some of this is a great idea. From what I've seen Roy; there doesn't seem to be a name out here that you "don't" know. Have you got a huge database with everyone's info/bio on it and you're just pulling this all out of storage? Or are you travels so vast, that you run into all these people all the time?

Anyway... reunion sounds like a fantastic idea. Because of this site, I've met someone I haven't seen in 25 yrs. and hooked up with some long lost friends. This site deserves some recognition of some kind. And I couldn't think of a better reason to crack a keg for; than a reunion. It should be a riot.

He had a pretty tough existence after high school. Moved from job to job, I think his wife was the cause of a lot of his problems. A way Emory University manages having people from a number of class years at one reunion is to have (tall) signs at each table, or maybe group of tables, designating class years. You can find your own class easily, and it's also easier to look for friends from other years.

If we can really pull off a BHS 2000, maybe we want pre-1960, 60-64, 65-69, etc. rather than individual years.

It seems (with a few exceptions), most of us are located near Columbus or Atlanta; so maybe Columbus would work. Something else you may want to consider. since this would be a very different style of high school reunion; is some media coverage. An idea like this comes along very rarely and would be worth some special attention (just a side thought).

Lynn,

Mike Kocian was Gene's son. Unfortunately, Gene past away last year. He had in the past, played or was the leader of a Big Band type group. The Columbus Enquirer did a very nice piece on him.

Steve and Baker Bums:

THE BIG REUNION.... 1998 would be fine with me, and I would be willing to help with the event. Our committee consisted of Linda Watley, Lance Hartman, Chuck Smith, Tommy Kirkman, Pat Jones and me. However, Bob Lamee says he would be willing to help out this time, and I'm sure most of the net serfers would be willing to assist. The sooner the better, we ain't getting any younger and I hope we all make it to 2000.

Hello Veronica! How are you and Bruce? This is Vince Collier '68. I have always wondered how you two were doing! I now read a little about Del(l) in the BHS web site. Hes certainly turned into a fine person! I knew you were keeping Bruce straight for years, but I never knew Ken, too many years ahead of me. How is Roger doing? Where are you and Bruce, and Roger?

I'm at the Pentagon now. Still in the Army. Got divorced from my first wife of 21 years about 4 years ago...and since Uncle Sam divides retirement pay between spouses now, I am staying on active duty until the Army runs me off! Luckily, I met a really wonderful person, Kathy Zea, up at Ft. Monmouth, NJ. We dated and 11 monthes later got married. We both work in the puzzle palace and get to ride in together and out at the end of the day! Walt Hall is an attorney with the VA here, COL Charles Orck (Air Force) is an attorney at Bolling AFB, right across the Potomac River from the Pentagon, COL John Floris (can you believe this Bruce?) works right across the hall, literally, from Kathy. He works in DCSOPs, and has been selected three times below the zone for promotion. Thank God he was not selected for BG!! That would have been insufferable!

Barbara Miller married an infantry officer at Ft. Benning years ago, and he is now a BG at the Pentagon. His and her son is a freshman at Ga. So. in Statesboro. Hes pledging my son Rhett's fraternity, Sigma Nu. Small world! At the twenty year reunion of class of '68, I went by the nursing home in Columbus and visited Eddie Aman. Tough! His Mom was there and Suzanne (1st spouse) and I spoke with her and visited for about an hour.

Saw Faye at the 25th reunion 3.5 years ago. She was in her blonde hair stage. I guess the daughter is full grown and on her own and the boys must really be getting big. That whole situation is unbelievable tough. My heart goes out to the family.

My sister Shirley is a sixth grade teacher in Blakely, Ga. Wayne Honeycutt lived down the road from them for a while. He is an industrial welder or something like that. He and his family fell on hard times for a while...not enough work for Wayne in little Blakely to make ends meet. Seems like a lot of folks in the community helped them out, the church, etc. Then Wayne got jobs further out of the county, requiring him to go out on the road. Don't know what their status is now. Hope they're doing okay.

Anyway, Shirley married Clink Alexander, of Blakely. Hes a banker/gentleman farmer. That means he sinks most of his bank paycheck into cows and such and Shirley had to go to work so they could prepare for their children's college.

Adam is a freshman at Ga. Tech, 6'3" tall and very smart. Got most of his school paid for in scholarships, grants, etc. Whitney, 16, is a junior in high school, 5'9", smart, good looking, and Tripp is 15, soph, 6'5" tall. All doing well. Shirley is the shrimp in her family! Looks like the '68 reunion will be a BIG UN! Sounds fine to me. We'll head down from Washington DC and do our best to participate!!

If you Emerson folks are ever in this area, please call! (703). We have plenty of room! We can sit in front of the fireplace and stroll down memory lane!

Bruce, do you or your brother Ken know where Sidney Roche is now? Roy mentioned something about somewhere in Florida? Neither he or Mike are listed in their respective years in the BHS web pages! Take care of yourselves, and I remain, an old friend, always,

Vince

This is Alice's, what's her name sister, Lori, replying to your e-main of 30 January regarding Port Canaveral. Yes, Don, Mr. Major is commanding the port at Canaveral. I am however no longer Mrs. Major Buxton and I am doing much better keeping company with Tom Mowery, right here at his computer, our four combined children in bed, and his dick in my mouth. Anyway, what's going on with you?

Bob,

.I, personnally, am all for the year 2000 reunion as it will be my 25th. I have missed all others for the Class of '75 and am starving for old acquaintences. I have been enjoying the latest reminiscing on the line but never hear from anyone from my class. I was wondering what happened to Alice Collier, Lenora Martin, any band members from that era. What happened to John Grantham, the band director. I have been completely cut off from everything in Columbus since 1977. Thanks

Sunshine '68:

Sorry to hear about Gene's Kocian's passing. My dad told me a year or two ago that his wife (Gloria) had died of leukemia, so Gene must have followed shortly thereafter.

My father played in Gene's band, and I used to babysit for their daughter. (I think Gene had one son from a former marriage, and I think he was a Lion, and Gene and Gloria had another son plus the baby I sat for.) Gloria loaned me a beautiful pink formal to wear to a boyfriend's graduation prom in Opelika, AL in 1964 - boy, that was a long time ago. I hadn't thought about or seen Gloria in years - really, almost 30 years, because I moved to Seattle in 1968 - and one day I thought about her all day long. The next week I found out from my father that that was the day she had died. I didn't even know she was sick. It was so odd.
