I feel the same way, Mike...
It is so sad that so many are gone. It is sometimes useful to count your blessings at such a time... At least:

Souls Immortal

We are thankful for the chance to "know"
Before they left us
Those souls who finished
What they came to do on this earth.
We, too, will have the time to finish
What WE set out to do on this earth.
And then we will also take our cue to "exit, stage right",
And depart.
But each of us is a richer soul for having known
Each other soul..
And each of us has gained rewards
By helping to refuel
Another soul
In the upward spiral of this long journey back to God.
And if we only found ourselves,
Reaching out
For a helping hand,
Then too, we gained
The reward of friendship
For the gracious "receiving"
>From another soul.
Think on this as each memory comes to view.
Each and all are connected, like me and you.
We all share this earth in God,
As each of us endeavors to perform God's Will
With our own Heart
Mind and
Soul.

Subject: Ed Mull

Total Rehab of Fayetteville, hosts the local Arthritis Support Group meeting each month. At the last meeting, I attended the Tai Chi Seminar and Demonstration. After some words and discussion on Tai Chi, during the Tai Chi practice session, I met a man named "Eddie". I borrowed his notes. A couple days later, I needed to check a word or two that I couldn't "make out" so I called him. (I want to sign up for the Tai Chi class)!

Ed Mull had written his phone number at the top of his notes. We talked. I told him I was an "Army Brat". He is also an Army Brat. I asked, "Where have you been? To which places on this earth has YOUR family traveled"? As it turns out...Julius Ed (Edward?) Mull was at Baker High School in 1963. He was a Freshman.

[He didn't get the Yearbook). Is there a way we can order old yearbooks? Does anyone know to which company or address we could write for information on the possibilities of getting old yearbooks or maybe reprints? My sister, Sandi lost hers in a fire (Sandra Ann Graves '69). She might like one for 1967 and 1968 when she attended Baker High. (My Dad got orders to Fairbanks, Alaska in '68).]

Eddie left during 1963 because his Dad got orders to Germany. He went to the Frankfurt American High School. I believe he said he graduated from the Frankfurt school. I told him about "@Baker".

He has plans for the computer he wants, just like I do. But both of us, are having a 'tight' year. Maybe neither of us will get our computer this year. But, I WILL help Eddie 'link up' to "@Baker" when he gets his computer.

Does anyone remember Ed Mull? If you want me to send him a message let me know; I can voice phone him.

Isn't this fun? I don't really believe in coincidence. I believe everything happens for a reason. I believe God is very much present (Omnipresent). I, personally, love the ways life chooses to manifest itself.

We used a printing company (COSCO maybe?) downtown for the '64 Arrowhead, and I believe that the same company was used before and since. (We were mad because theyt always printed Columbus High's book 1st even tho we had our copy in before them.) All copies (including reprints) of the '64 Arrrowhead were sold. Not sure who kept the plates they were printed from. Looking into this sounds like a project for some one in Columbus.

I know my sister would be overjoyed to get new copies. Since Eddie (Julius EDGAR Mull) brought it up, it makes perfect sense to pose the question. I wonder who in Columbus would check to see what the possibilities are if the publisher is still in business?

My brother is right about COSCO being the printer used for Baker annuals. However, I do want to add a little caveat to his remarks. In 1965, we were given a printing date for our annual. After having met all of our deadlines for turning in material, etc. we found out that, once again, our annual was being set aside so that Columbus High's annual could be printed first. This decision was made in spite of the fact that we had all our materials in before theirs. It also meant that we would not receive our annuals until after the last day of school.

Bob Blaney and I decided that the previous committment to us from COSCO ought to stand as a verbal contract, so we called and told them that we either had the annual when promised, or they would have a picket line in front of their business for a week, not to mention complaints to the Better Business Bureau. Bob let me make the phone call, which, by the way, was condoned by Mr. Boyles.

We got our annual on time that year, and we got it before Columbus High got theirs. The page that Bob Blaney signed in my annual has a lengthy accolade about the crusade against COSCO, and when I get home, I'll look up the owner's name, which is prominently displayed.

If you check out the 1965 annual, you will see that Coach Ball's picture is missing (Bob had a running conflict with him) and that there is a picture of a fictitious girl's basketball team, complete with names. (The photographer sent us the picture by mistake). The annual is a fitting memorial to Bob, as it includes this evidence of his black humour. Also to Awilda Otero, who did the funky illustrations over the protests of some of the more conservative staff members.

Mike,

Do you know anyone in Columbus who could check into this matter? Someone may have already looked into it ... maybe before I came on board.

Does anyone know if that publisher is still in business? Has anyone ever asked about the plates or about reprintings? Were there ever extras from any year? (I thought they were done by order only).

These are questions that come to mind...that may already have been acted upon by someone who is signed on here. I do not believe in expending time on double work in any case. Time is valuable and if someone already knows the answers to any of the questions above, it could save "spinning our wheels" on this or devoting anymore time to inquire.

FYI,
By the time I was at Baker, we were using Herff Jones (was that 1 or 2 f's???) for our yearbook publisher. I was class and clubs editors for the Lion's Pride yearbooks my last 3 years there. One year the staff got to go to a Herf Jones plant trip and see how they produced them. That was way cool. It was somewhere in Alabama, at least a 3 hour drive, but I can't remember where.

Bob,

I got a job with IBM in Charlotte, NC! Thanks for the help and interest!

A quick call to Columbus information yeilded nothing for COSCO which stood for Columbus Office Supply Company. They may be renamed or out of business.

Herff Jones was used for the 73 and 74 annual, for sure.

I doubt that any printer would have the plates and even if they did you wouldn't want to pay for the set up and short run.

Maybe you can borrow one and make copies via a copier?

Well, I've been following the yearbook discussion, but didn't really have much to add until I thought about it a bit.

It used to be that the Bradley Library kept high school yearbooks, but someone (Glenn Wells, maybe?) mentioned that they quit doing that and shipped their collections back to the schools.

Jeanne Penny Sweeney and I have visited Baker Middle School and scoffed around for yearbooks. They have fewer than half of them.

I think there's very little chance of getting reprints of any year, but it sure would be nice to see a more complete collection of Baker yearbooks someplace safe and permanent.

I wonder what sort of a contribution it would take to get Columbus State to agree to house a set? I'm not willing to give mine up just yet, but I could easily be talked into leaving them to Columbus State if I knew they'd be taken care of, and I'm willing to write a check now if enough of us will contribute to get them to agree to house the colleciton.

Is there someone who is willing to follow up on this idea with the Columbus State library?

History here - I hated homeroom so much (we were over crowded, so we were among several classes stuffed in the balcony of the gym) that I spent the year going from homeroom to homeroom taking yearbook orders. I sold so many that we had to extend the printing and sell a bunch without the hardcover. Probably the only paperback issue of a high school yearbook around. Anyway, Dr. Kirby told me that it was the only yearbook to make a profit at Baker. He used the extra money to pay for debate team trips.

...Yes, in 63 he would have been a Sophmore. He's called me back a couple of times. One time it was quite late and one of my cats was dying (19 year old, "Leia"). I had lost 11 year old "Hardee Cat" the week before (it got hit by a car, we think). He talked to me for quite a while and helped me through the process of waiting for "Father Time" to lead an old friend to another dimension.

...This week, on Wednesday he called to invite me to a meditation group at Cape Fear Hospital (Cardiac and Oncology). Afterward, we shared stew he made at his house and he gave me a new white kitten. He said he was quite a fighter back when he went to Baker High. He was involved in quite a few scraps during his Freshman year...then his Dad got orders in his Sophmore year to Germany.

He graduated in '65 from Frankfurt American High School. He played football with the local American Youth Association in Schaffenburg (sp?). He works for Borden Chemical now but is out of work for chronic back/knee/ankle problems. Eddie seems to be a "fighter" still! He is determined to beat the pain in one way or another. We share an interest in alternative healing...like meditation, visualization, Tai Chi, etc. With these, as well as, what his doctors order he plans to "get back to work" at Borden. (I know I changed my type "A" personality using some of the alternative methods many years ago). It CAN work!

Very interesting Mike!

Probably the very best way to get old copies of out of print yearbooks would be to scan them to computer disk. The disks could be used to scan into scrapbook/yearbook section of @Baker or even to put a copy of yearbook or sections of a yearbook to print by loading from disk copy and using printer peripheral. These could be shared, even mailed back and forth through the postal service.

Or another idea, and of course this would ALL cost money and take time. (It would involve a lot of patience). If one had the scanner...and scanned Baker memorabilia, including or even sections of yearbooks. One of the things that could come of this @Baker Web Page would be a source of memorabilia, yearbooks, etc. (If someone had all the equipment and the time and the desire to start a sideline business). It is only an idea, a concept of something that possibly could be done. Some person might even start a home based business doing such a thing to earn money after retirement.

Legal ramifications would have to be checked with a lawyer to be sure who has copyright, etc., etc. or if in case of sections of yearbooks would copyright come into play....and if you were doing this to just share...like no money involved or exchanged then would it be legal to copy a whole yearbook or would that be an infringement of copyright....see what I mean about patience?

Have a better and better day!

Christmas greetings to all BHS Lions. Enjoy.

twas the newt before christmas, and throughout the white house
al gore was eyeing hillary, peering into her blouse.
the secret service men were guarding the premises with care,
for a whole host of democrats were vacationing there.

Chelsea was nestled all snug in her bed
after locking out mr kennedy and the dirty thoughts in his head.
and bill in his sportcoat, a heavy grey tweed
had just fried his brain with some mexican weed!

when out in the garden came a plethora of noise
all drunken and rowdy...it was newt and the boys!
Bill jumped to the window, and tore open the sash
"its a raid, boys!", he cried..."quick, go hide my stash!"

the pot in his blood and the moon on the snow
gave a psychedelic haze to the objects below.
when what to bills bloodshot eyes should appear
but a slew of republicans and a keg of iced beer!

the big old leader, all lively and fat
he knew it was newt, proponent of GATT!
as vicious as vipers, the republicans came
and bill recognized them, and called them by name

"hey, helms! hey, thurmond! hey packwood and hatch! hey dole, hey
pataki----its time for a bash!"
a collective cheer rose up from the crowd--
"lets listen to nugent and turn it up loud!"

together dems and republicans danced and sang out in cheer
"screw health care and haiti, its time to drink beer!"
when from the chimney came a blinding black cloud of soot
and limbaugh jumped from the fireplace in a red santa suit.

he moved through the crowd, then he held up his hand
and when all was silent, he did a keg stand.
and the crowd raised their cups, as newt bowed down in prayer
and brewski did flow as freely as welfare!

as kennedy and reno romped in the green room
the rest of the crooks outlined their agenda of doom
"we'll pray in the schools, we'll shove it down their throats!"
"more welfare, more taxes....we'll still get the votes!"

and they drank, hugged and danced, and they crossed party lines
and they cheered "it doesn't matter, we're ALL bastard swine!"
so they threw out allegiance and partisan crap
and all took turns sitting on the president's lap.

and gephardt and dole passed out on the lawn
and awoke the next morning without their pants on.
and packwood gave tipper a pat on the rear,
while judge thomas and miss hill went after more beer.

then the partygoers discovered a sight, so touching and cute
president clinton fast asleep, snuggled up next to newt!
santa limbaugh smiled and threw up on his boots....
"a merry clinton to all, and to all a good newt!"

Were you one of those involved in the get together (informal) at Tucker's in Atlanta? I have lost my copy of the original email. I thought about doing that little "trip". or maybe one like it sometime. Atlanta is probably 5 to 6 hours from here. But, time is getting short and some planning and arranging would have to be done. I still have 1 miniature schnauzer and 3 large male cats (all neutered) and one very new White kitten to be fed, watered and allowed to go outside. I have to schedule someone to come in when I am gone for very long. I will leave work today at 1430 Hrs...to go to Raleigh. I will keep searching (in spare moments) for that original until then.

Thanks again.

Okay,

I checked on COSCO and they were indeed bought out many years ago by another company. I contacted the former COSCO manager and copies of the annual are not available.

I contacted a local printing company who said they can reproduce annuals and put them in a spiral binder and the cost would be between 50 to 85 cents a page.

Hi all,

It has been just a little over a year and I have met so many renewed and new Baker friends. You are a second family to me. I have relished sweeping the cobwebs out of my mind and remembering.... special memories of people, times and places that are a part of who I am today. Thank you all very much for being a part of this *wish* -- one that is so much better than any dream.

A special thanks to Bob, Mike, Kathy and Debbie -- it has kinda like seeing ya'll in the halls again or in the lunchroom before school starts. Another thanks for Sandye, Rolf, Elaine Johnny for helping to shape this mail distribution list (I know that I have left another 20 out -- believe me, not on purpose).

For the next year, I look forward to the *big* birthday (am stilllll younger than most ALL of my classmates and glad about it this time!) -- as well as the wedding of a wonderful son that came as a package with my late husband, and going back to graduate school. Am glad to join you at our "breakfast table" to chat about how our lifes are unraveling.

Hope you had a wonderful Christmas and wishing you the best for the New Year.

Bob,

Unfortunately, I'm not going to pass through Atlanta on the way up. I'll plan on catching you sometime on the way to Columbus from Charlotte though.

Happy holidays everyone!

Hello, I am Charmaine (Miller) Thaner from the class of 1970. It's been fun reading e-mail from others.

Bill Miller (no relation) also from the class of 1970 has recently moved to Colorado. What is amazing is that he is teaching in the same school district as I am. We both have first and second graders in a continuum classroom - tho we are in different elementary buildings. When I saw him introduced at our district's beginning of the year meeting I couldn't believe it. Twenty-six years later, and here we are both teaching in the same small town in Colorado. We've had fun looking at old yearbooks. He never got his senior year picture taken, which is maybe why he isn't listed on the Baker High School Lion's class of 1970 list.
