I Made It!

I am now on the Baker High School Web Site. I found out about the site through my sister, Susie (Class of '76), and immediately tried to find it. I'm pleasantly surprised.

I'm from the Class of '72, and also have a brother, George (Class of '74) who attended Baker. Yes, a whole Baker family (well . . . siblings, anyway).

I now live and work in Dallas, Texas, and visit Georgia (and Columbus) every couple of years. I was in Columbus last Christmas (1995), and had the opportunity to see Baker (it's a Middle School now, right? . . . or is it closed?). It looks like it hasn't changed much, at least its appearance.

I'm glad to be a part of the Internet project, and look forward to hearing from fellow Baker HS Alumni.

Lions,

If you all will remember, I mentioned 'Reunion Hall' back in July. Lots of us registered there, but it has taken over two months for them to create the 'Baker Alumni Page'. It is now in place, but all that registered previously, are not recorded there.

I sent my buddy, Robert Kim, an E-Mail to find out if the names would be applied, or if we all need to register again. I am forwarding his response to the group, and asking everyone to please register there (again).

Reunion Hall is a huge database, and will be seen by many people around the world. To go directly to Baker's page, the URL is as follows:
<http://www.xscom.com/reunion/ga/col/bhs> Thanks.

Subject: Goodie Day

Well folks, I finally crawled under the house, no small feat at my age, weight and physical condition, and looked for stuff many of you have asked about. God knows I must be a pack rat to haul all the stuff I found from Georgia to Kentucky to Texas to Ohio to Virginia to Illinois.

I'll try to get copies of as much as I can to Bob so it can be scanned into @Baker. I suspect that much will have to be retyped. Anyway, here is the inventory:

Program 1964 BHS Graduation exercises

Program 1964 BHS Class day

Program 1964 BHS Honor Student Banquet

Program 1964 BHS Commencement services at the First Baptist Church

The Senior issue of the 1994 Lions' Roar (with class history)

The congratulatory letter Senator Herman Talmadge sent all graduates

The 1993 Challenger Literary Magazine

The 1994 Challenger Literary Magazine

(Kathy, there was nothing in either by Petra Kelly.)

And the April 1 parody on the Lion's Roar - The Cat's Meow.

I've got to get hopping and find a scanner. The two challengers do not look like they will lend themselves to scanning. We will have to see.

I think I discovered a bit of archive info: (exceptional for someone who doesnt' save anything!)

Well, of course I'm only a humble Adjunct Instructor, but I'll reply anyway.

I did a stupid thing. I signed up to teach CS675, a graduate seminar on the management of technology. It's Saturday afternoons, it's a subject I know well, and the students are supposed to do about half the work.

Well... it turns out that the department chairman didn't have anyone to teach the evening undergraduate computer architecture class, and he asked at the last minute if I'd take it. I stupidly said yes. Tomorrow night I get to give a 2-1/2 hour lecture on Boolean algebra, a subject about which I know slightly less than nothing. I have the textbook out, and my old graduate architecture book, and Kohavi's _Switching and Finite Automata Theory_ from 1970, and _Elements of Data Processing Mathematics_. It'll be interesting to see how I do with this.

I get my life back December 11. If I live that long!

Hello to all! I'm trying to keep my head behind the proverbial log at Emory. The last time I emerged, I was zapped with an additional three sections of business communication (65 students) for a whopping total of 182 students! Yikes, this is worse than teaching high school English! Hey, Bob, when you learn how to say "NO!" could you give me a few lessons?

My book, CrossTalk: Communicating in a MultiCultural Workplace, is being pushed for adoptions now, but the trade push will be after the first of the year. That means it won't be in regular bookstores until around February of '97 (it's a '97 copyright --Prentice Hall). So far the academic reviews have been favorable.

We're officially "empty nesters" now with William (18) at Auburn and Ann Larie (20) at Univ. of GA. Still feels strange, but we're QUICKLY getting used to it. Hope all of you are having a great change of seasons! Keep up the chat --certainly makes for interesting reading. And remember to keep your heads low!

Menses,

What a terrific time! Both Friday and Saturday went well. Last night a Holiday Inn was a delight--management very friendly and coopera- tive. Small group stayed in hospitality room until 3AM+. Brenda V showed up w/engagement ring. Will become Mrs. Chesser in Dec. Mrs. Griner + Oscar P. in good form. Paul Voorhees showed up Sat, plus 8-10 more that hadn't signed up or notified us. Holiday Inn--no sweat. And the Chow X was tasty: Salad, Roast Beef + Gravy, Fried Chicken, Green Beans, Potatoes Au Gratin, Squash Casserole, Rolls, Peach Cobbler. They let us have the dining+dancing rooms until 1:30AM. Melillo beside herself with fun she was having at 1st reunion. Bob Brown (invited and pre-paid) joined us Sat. Robbie Williams', Pat Olds', and Linda Boswell's husbands were quiet for 2 nights, but helped quite a bit.

Al, we didn't use the stereo you so laboriously disconnected and reconnected last year. Used a much smaller set + speakers I have back in the Den. Plenty of volume. Melillo, Jimmy Lawrence, Candy Hiatt, and others got cranked up on the dance floor for awhile. Hope the tape turns out well.

Enough for now--want to feed you this in bits and pieces.

To W.J. Orr,

No, I'm not one of those Joiners. My brother, Tommy, graduated with you in ' 59. He played basketball with Paul Holmes, Robert Pritchard, Bruce Bolden, Jet Nixon and those guys. They were a great basketball team.

Other brother Eddie, graduated in ' 61 ( with Newton ), and also played round ball, although he and Bubba didn't see eye to eye and he sat out his senior year.

I left Baker, as a sophmore in ' 63 and graduated in ' 65, from Leilehua High School, in Hawaii.

I always idolized those guys from the late fifties who played sports. Being in the seventh and eighth grades around then, of course, it was my 'goal' to be the best basketball and baseball player, to ever walk Baker's hallways. Too bad that we all have to grow up.

I love how the Lion Cub first grade picture turned out. I know, I promised that once the Olympics ended I'd transmit current photo of me and my senior picture. Soon to be done -- I hope.

BTW, my friend never made it to Columbus for job hunting. Her father had a heart attack just before driving out the driveway with car fully packed. So, everything is on hold. Thank you to those who responded with excellent job search information. Your efforts are truly appreciated by me!

There was two blocks on Fletcher Ave. I think I probably lived on the one down from you. I also remember living near Bob and Bill Layfield. I later served in the Air Force with Bill. Does anyone know if he is still around Columbus ?

Probably so. You must lived near the little store. We used to ride our bikes "all the way down" the street to buy gum. I remember when they blacktopped our dirt street. What a dust bowl for several days! It was the big back yard that I remember most, as well as climbing up the big chinaberry tree. Georgia brings so many good memories to our family.

I plan to tote my family to Columbus in about 3 years when I take my daughter's Girl Scout troop to Savannah. You guys have told me it has changed tremendously, so I'll have the Chamber mail a city map to me this winter. The lake house we lived at for two years was on a simple RFD road and now it looks like a main artery northeast of Columbus (Floyd Road now). Three years is a long time to wait.

No, no. My parents did not attend Baker. I was the in last first grade class to be held at Baker. Mid-year in 1958 the elementary grades migrated to the BRAND NEW Muscogee Elementary. If we had continued to live in Columbus I would have graduated from Baker in 1969. Instead, Dad, who was the Army, was transferred to NJ and then to NM and then he retired to CA (Lemon Heights is 15 minutes from my home in Lake Forest). However, we our family gathers for holidays and such, we always talk about GA and how those were the best years of our lives.

Now that my Mom has reconnected with her friend, Mom will be making a trip back to Columbus. She's going to AAA this morning to order a city map and we'll begin tracing the roads we followed from Benning to the "River" and out to RFD 2 (now Floyd Rd).

I love CA's weather. Usually really mild. We DO have our occassional earthquake, windstorm (like this week!). Kids spend all their time outside because it is so mild.

It's the high-technology boom that I like. I own a technical writing services company and have some big clients like TRW and Hughes, as well as the smaller start-ups, like Kofax and Irvine Sensors. Our writers and editors work at home and so do I. I'm the school mom and get the kids to elementary school by 7:50 flag salute. Then at 2:25, you'll find me at the bus stop waiting for the neighborhood kids. After that my afternoons are filled with activities: Tuesday Youth Bowling League (I just earned my certificate this week -- 100% on the written exam!!), Wednesday I spend 2 hours at school with the Riso and ditto machines (2 very cooperative @@####!!! machines), Thursday is Brownies (I'm the Leader of 11 seven-year olds!!). That leaves Mondays and Fridays for sales calls and client meetings and in between my share of writing, editing, or illustrating.

But, hey, I get the best of both worlds. Now, I need to get that retirement pool started, after all, I'm no youngster anymore (45). It does get hectic and the university wants me to come back to teach technical writing at night!! I don't think I can stay awake until 10 pm anymore. Those of you who have taught Extension courses know that wages are paid after the semester ends and it is poverty level. You have to really enjoy what your doing that's for sure.

Well, back to a different kind of writing. Keep in touch.

Hey, all-

It is great to see ya'll sharing such great memories of South Columbus. I grew up in Oakland Park and only wish we had such great neighborhoods for our kids to grow up in today. It was fun to play near the river, Bull Creek or just collect Coke bottles for my 3 cents from the Piggly Wiggly and spend the money on baseball cards at the dime store. I live in Marietta, GA. now and the pace is much different for kids today.

I grew up in a Baker family. My sisters are Fran Conner Bilon('65) who married David Bilon('65) not to long ago. She teaches school in Newnan, GA. and Carol Conner Stockman('77) who lives about three miles from me in Marietta.

Welcome Chip,

It's great to see a baseball fan come on line. If I had all of the baseball cards that I collected, while in Columbus, I could probably retire today. The only person that I ever knew of having more than I, was a friend named Jimmy Herrin. To make matters worse, when I left Columbus, I thought it was the end of the world, so I gave Jimmy most of my collection, thereby nearly doubling his. No telling how many ( thousands ) of cards he had after that.

I have heard that Jimmy is a doctor in Columbus now. If so, I wonder if I helped put him through Medical School.

Anyway, welcome to ' @ Baker ', you're gonna like it here.

I am going to provide the yearbook and try to assist somehow in scanning in the photos from the yearbooks when I finally get settled.

Do you remember any Yarbroughs or Cooks who lived around the Fletcher Ave area? What about the Gallaghers? (Spelling?)

All,

For you "youngsters " who attended BHS after 1959, did you know that Baker housed all twelve grades for years? I started in 1947 (age 5) and attended from grades 1 through half of the the 6th grade. They opened South Columbus Elementary School (Torch Hill Road) where I was part of the first 6th grade class in the 1952-1953 school year. They added a new wing the next year and I became a member of the first 7th grade class also. It was back to Baker for grades 8 thru 12. So I attended Baker for 101/2 out of the 12 years. Who on line can beat that??

Janice Pait Bolles!

We played in the band together our freshman year. I played flute, and we had a TERRIBLE band director. Do you remember forming the shape of a rocket on the field? Personally, I had a heck of a time at away games trying to figure out which way the band formations would face (I'm directionally challenged anyway.) Also, we came to Atlanta for a massing of high school bands at a GA Tech game. Our band was part of the "T" in spelling out GA Tech! Do you remember that it rained and we all were soaked and muddy for the bus trip home? Wouldn't have been so bad if we hadn't had those white shoes and spats (not to mention the wool uniforms).

Also, wasn't your husband something of a football legend? Didn't he have a brother who was also an excellent player? When the Bolles boys were babies, their mom had to take a ship to Europe to meet her husband who was stationed there. My father (William Ray Alderman "Ray") helped her take care of the boys on the trip over. My mom later brought me (age 4) and my sister (Dana Alderman, class of '70) who was 6 months old at the time, over to Munich where my dad was stationed. Amazing how many "connections" we are finding through @Baker.

I remember you as Debbie, and I was in your sophomore English class- not to mention geometry and band. I think you sat next to my sister Carolyn Freeman '65 in band. Since I moved back to Georgia several years ago I have been trying to locate some of the members that were in the class of '66 (I left in '65).

Do you or anybody else happen to know the whereabouts of John Smith or Don Miles? They would have been in the class of "66. Also, can you recall most of the names of the students that were in your English class of that year.

I know this is a tall order but I can't remember the name of one of the girls who sat in the row by the windows. I figure she is an accomplished author of some sort by now just like other members of that class that I won't mention. I was pretty overwhelmed by transferring to Baker that year and it didn't help being in a class full of geniuses.

Also, do you know what happened to Ms Pound (Trimble)? Did she continue teaching at BHS? I wish I would have been able to have graduated from Baker.. maybe someone could print up some honorary (dishonorary perhaps) degrees...

As I told George Freeman, I remember our sophomore year in Miss Pound's English class very well. When we had to act out scenes from plays, my group had _Medea_ and we decided that a male should play Medea (like the Greeks). I ended up as Jason (nonGreek convention) in my dad's combat boots, and we added a nice little spectacle with Medea's chariot drawn by a dragon (George, was that you?) The effect was not exactly high tragedy and Miss Pound was a bit irked.

Petra Kelly was also in that class and I recall her reading an essay about her early life in Germany with a father who would not allow tears or dolls. Since then, I have thought that the essay explained a lot about Petra's motivations, but who knows.

Mike (Sharon) McCloskey was in there too--she did _Member of the Wedding_.

Chip,

I am finding Memphis quite enjoyable. Will be better when I get setled in and have all of my things including my best friend and exercise partner, a tri-color collie named Sye.

I lived in the Texas panhandle ( Pampa, which is near Amarillo) from 1980 - 1995. Lewis Grizzard (deceased humorist and columnist) performed in concert once in Amarillo and joked at the scarcity of trees and foilage, saying that he felt sorry for the kids there because they had to take a number to climb a tree. While I enjoyed the great people, I really missed the babbling brooks, the tall oak trees, the pines of dear 'ol Georgia and the like. Memphis geography is closer to that of Columbus.

Texas barbeque (mostly beef ) was great but nothing like our southeastern style. Memphis has some of the greatest - but I still haven't located any Brunswick stew. Neither have I seen the duck walk at the Peabody but will put it on the agenda. I love eating at the restaurants overlooking the mighty Mississippi, Beale Street and the great blues music, Graceland and the king, and being closer to my mother and other family members in Georgia.

On the down side I really miss my daughters and two grandchildren who live in Amarillo. This is the first time I have moved to a new location solo (without wife and family) which makes the transition difficult at times. This great city has some attractions which ease the burden though.

Thanks for your pointers on Memphis.

Actually you're recall of Miss Pound's English class is better than mine. I do remember someone named Duna Poteet. (spelling?). The person I'm trying to remember sat behind her( I think). Her brother got a scholarship at Columbus (Community College). I think it was Debbie who squealed when she heard some Beatle's music that filtered through from a party upstairs. (Also irking Miss Pound-should I tell your children?). It was the also the class where we heard that JFK was shot. I believe we had a sustitute teacher that day who was from Texas and was worried about John Connolly/ but not Lyndon Johnson or JFK.

As for the play in Greek mythology I believe I played someone trying to catch a spear (but was killed instead). There were only 3 boys in the class and I was the smallest. Probably the smallest student in the school. I grew after that but it was mainly out. It was by far the hardest class I ever had in my life -Col. Mitchell's geometry class was a picnic in comparison. I should give Miss Pound credit for preparing me for college, its not her fault she had so little to work with (comma splice included). Presently I am a biologist at the Center for Disease Control working with a parasitic disease (Schistosoma mansoni) ...sort of mentioned once on X Files.

This is getting really strange ;-)

Let's see; I'll try to describe where our house was: if one were to start from the North end of McCartha (St. Mary's Rd?) and head South, then our house was on the right, at about the beginning of the hill down to the bus stop, which was on the other side of the street at the bottom of the hill, at the intersection (yes, I think it might have been Curry) - right about now I'd commit a crime for a street map of Columbus.

The terrible thing is that I don't remember any names - shoot. I remember that I had a really good friend that lived toward the bottom of the next hill on McCartha on the left - toward the next intersection, which was a road from the right. ( . . .wasn't there a nursery, or cemetery, or something toward the South end of McCartha, on the right?) Hmm, I guess more than 30 years takes its toll on the memory, too bad.

Don't get me wrong, but my most vivid memory was playing spin the bottle in the carport at a party at one of the newer houses (brick, of course) with a group that included one girl, a touch younger (or the same age as I) and her sister, one or two years older; at the time I was either in the 8th or 9th grade.

Strange, the memories that come back after all of these years. I have to admit, I got pretty exited at seeing ya'll write about that neighborhood - thanks!

Okay, then, I guess I'll have to travel to Columbus real soon and find our house. Dad swears it was 921 on the same block as the church, not the block with the store. Say, maybe we have a picture of it and I'll scan it and send to Webmaster or can I attach it to e-mail? Joy White (69 Lion Cub)

Rolf, There is no CR Milton in my '65 yearbook, but there is a Chester Milton in the '64 yearbook... any relation? Older women, Hmmmmm...

Sounds like you lived really close to Kathy King (at the bottom of the hill on the corner, closest to St. Mary's school.

Sandye -- Ann Bridges was such a nice person (she lived about a block away from me). Didn't she go to nursing school at the Medical Center in Columbus? Please tell her that I said hello. I would love to see her. I lost my husband with cancer of the stomach -- my sons were older - one a senior in high school and the other in college -- not easy.

Donna Devine was another wonderful person. Does anyone know what she is doing now? I know that John Chase (the last I talked with him) kept up with her sister, Kathy. It is funny how names just pop into my head that I haven't thought about in YEARS and YEARS.

I can't wait until Christmas card time so that I can let some of those once a year friends know about this chat area.

The church name must have changed. I am certain it used to be Benning Park Baptist Church as I was a member and baptized there many moons ago. Rev Lee Knowles was pastor had a son, Lee, and a daughter, Martha, both of whom finished at Baker prior to 1959.

Hah! In a sleepless moment (like this one!) I actually designed an @Baker postcard. Nothing fancy... black type on white paper, but it explains enough for someone to find us.

I may have to drop by Kinko's and get some of them printed up so people can include them in Christmas mailings. (I wonder if I will...)

Yep, that's me. I've never seen that yearbook; sadly enough. Can't wait until we get pictures to go with the names for the class rosters at the Baker site.

Oh boy; I knew I should have kept that to myself ;-))

Can't recall the name. We moved over to Hunt Avenue (near Eastway ? Elementary School)) in '63 or '64.

Thank you Larry Johnson for the information on the maps! Great tip! My memory was partly correct. The bus stop was at Curry, but St Marys Rd is to the South and Steam Mill Rd is to the North. I'd say our house was about half way between Steam Mill and Curry.

BTW, Jeannie. I don't thing that we are getting old. We're just getting broken in.

Oh boy, just had another bit of memory torn loose by something I've read. During Summer vacation in '63 (I think) I recall going to a lake to water-ski with Bobby Peters and a family that attended the Church along St Mary's Rd. Had a great time, but maaaaan was it hot!

My thanks to all of you for letting me have some fun remembering McCartha Drive.
